About Doi Tung Royal Development Project Area

The Doi Tung Royal Development Project Area is situated in the mountainous region of Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. Established in 1988 under the patronage of the late Princess Mother (Somdej Phra Srinagarindra), the area was originally challenged by deforestation, opium cultivation, and poverty. The project aimed to rehabilitate the land through reforestation, community agriculture, and economic development based on sustainable practices. Today, it encompasses about 1,200 hectares of revitalized forests, terraced farming, and landscaped gardens. The climate features cool temperatures year-round due to its elevation of approximately 1,100 meters (3,600 feet). Major attractions include the Mae Fah Luang Garden, famous for its diverse collection of native and exotic plants, and the Doi Tung Pagoda, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Visitors can explore hiking trails, cultural villages of local hill tribes such as the Akha and Lahu communities, and participate in educational tours focused on sustainable agriculture and forestry. The project area also supports handicraft production, including weaving and pottery, boosting local livelihoods. The blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and environmental restoration creates a unique outdoor and learning experience, appealing to eco-tourists, hikers, gardeners, and cultural enthusiasts. The project’s success has transformed Doi Tung into a model for sustainable rural development and conservation in Southeast Asia.
